 Thomas and Jane Zachman

Thomas Frank Zachman was born in Cincinnati, Ohio November 17, 1945 to Earl and Miriam  Zachman of Ripley.   He is a graduate of the Culver Academies, Ohio Wesleyan University, and Duke University School of Law. He was an officer in the United States Air Force.  He was an attorney in Ripley served as Judge for the Brown County Municipal and County Courts for seventeen years until retirement.  He is a past president of the Ohio State Bar Foundation, and the Association of Municipal/ County Court Judges of Ohio. He has served on the Ohio State Bar Association Board of Governors and the Council of Delegates. He co-chaired the Ohio Judicial College New Judge Mentor Project and the Ohio Judicial Conference Retired Judges Committee and continues to serve on the Court Technology Committee. Zachman is an inaugural charter Fellow of the Advanced Science and Technology Adjudication Resource Project and serves on the National Programs Committee. The American Bar Association Judicial Division National Conference of Specialized Court Judges conferred on him the William R. McMahon Award for significant implementation of technological advances in a court of limited or specialized jurisdiction.

 August 9, 1969 Thomas Zachman and Jane (Nancy Jane Corlett) were married in Cincinnati, Ohio.  She is the daughter of Gilbert Horace Corlett ( December 7, 1913-November 2, 1989) and Mildren Auble Corlett (March 27, 1915-February 28, 1990).   Her faternal grandparents were Glen Hall and Laura Oyloe Corlette of Linton, Indiana, an engineer who worked for Cummins Engine and a teacher.  The Corlett/e family descended from John Edward Corlett (1828-1912) who was born in Douglas, Isle of Man and voyaged to America with his parents at the age of seven. His son, Horace Benjamin Corlett (1852-1932) was born in Sullivan County, NY but spent most his life in Clarion, Iowa.  He is the father of Glen Hall Corlette (1881-1942).  Laura Oyloe is descended from Gilbert and Mary Garden Oyloe who settled in Nordnos, Iowa after leaving Norway in 1850.  Their eldest son was Gilbert Glen who married in 1880 and was the father of Laura Mattilda Oyloe Corlette ( Dec.1880-1981). Jane’s maternal grandparents were James Laurence Auble (1892-1973) and Nancy (Nannie M.) Morgan Auble (1895-1986) of Cincinnati, Ohio.  James Laurence was the oldest of 18 children born in Cincinnati to James Harley Auble and Lulu Kees Auble.  Both James Harley and James Laurence were inventors of machines and tool parts and have over thirty registered patents. The Morgan family was from Anderson County, Kentucky.  Nancy/Nannie was the daughter of William Talton Morgan (born in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, 1873-1943) and Paulina Jane Lacefield Morgan (born in Old Alton, Kentucky, 1869-1956). 

 Jane graduated from Western Hills High School, Ohio Wesleyan University and University of Dayton (M. of Ed.).  After marriage the Zachmans made their home Ripley.  Jane worked for over 33 years in education, PreK- Graduate Level, as a teacher of mathematics, computers and curriculum. As a Director at the Clermont County Educational Service Center, she led a team of specialists in school improvement.  She and her team won the coveted Ohio’s BEST Award, the Ohio EPA Best Practice designation, and have given presentations at many state and national conferences.

 In Ripley, both Tom and Jane have given tirelessly to volunteer organizations including Ripley Fire Department, Kiwanis,  Rankin House, Ripley Museum, Ripley Library, Ripley Women’s Club, Reading Is Fundamental Program and Centenary United Methodist Church. They both were recognized with an Outstanding Citizen Award, Tom in 1988 and Jane in 2009. They are the parents of two daughters, Laura Eliese Zachman ( born June 10, 1975 in Georgetown, Ohio) and Elizabeth Jane Zachman (born February 2, 1977 in Georgetown, Ohio).  Laura served as a Page in the U.S. Congress, and graduated from Culver Academies, Dartmouth College and University of Michigan School of Law.  She married Nathan Jamison (born February 17, 1973 in North Branch, Michigan) on August 12, 2000.  They are the parents of four children all born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they live; Andrew Jackson (September 24, 2003, Ozaukee County), Henry Jacob ( April 25, 2006, Ozaukee County), and identical twins Abigail Grace and Eleanor Anne (February 14, 2009).  Elizabeth graduated from Culver Academies, Cornell University, Xavier University and Tulane University School of Law.  She married Len Orlando (Pompei Leonard Orlando III, (born March 9, 1978 in Libertyville, Illinois) on August 14, 2004.  They are the parents of two children born in Kettering, Ohio where they  live; Leonard Thomas (December 6, 2005) and Sarah Katherine  (July 3, 2008).

Earl G. and Miriam Stivers Zachman
(See Vol. 1, pages 164, 177)

Miriam Stivers Zachman passed away March 16, 2006.   She and her husband Earl had been married almost 59 years. Miriam is renowned for her lifetime community service.  She was a charter member of the Ripley Women’s Club which was organized in 1947, a charter member of Ripley’s American Legion Auxiliary, and an active member in the Ripley Lt. Byrd Chapter of DAR.  She was a lifelong and active member of the Centenary United Methodist Church.  She was a life member of Ripley Heritage and with her sister donated the family home to become the Ripley Museum.  She was a trustee and founding member of the John P. Parker Historical Society.  She was a major contributor and researcher for Ripley’s widely acclaimed historical work, Ripley, Ohio It’s History and Families, Vol. 1.  Throughout her years of service she was involved in many projects for Ripley, including helping to establish the Ripley Historic District, getting the road to Rankin House constructed, restoring the cannon on the Ripley Library yard and helping establish a Ripley kindergarten.  She donated the first handicapped accessible van to the newly formed Ripley Life Squad and is a lifelong supporter of the Ripley Library.  Miriam was a friend to all and helped many.  In 2002 she was presented with the Preservation Merit Award by the Ohio Historical Society.  She was a noted historian for Ripley and the surrounding area and corresponded to individuals all over the country tracking their ancestors.  She was talented and engaged in many artistic pursuits including the stained glass window project at the Methodist Church.

 Earl Gordon Zachman at age 90, died on June 15, 2007, in Ripley, Ohio. Earl was well-known for his Western Auto and Zachman Distributing Company in Ripley.  During World War II he served in the Army 8th Air Force for four years, two of which were in England.  He was a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous for fifty years.  He was a friend to all and helped many.
